After completing the 7th cycle, I started Matibi Metal Works with tools I purchased using my savings. Today, I employ 5 people and we create custom metal furniture and agricultural equipment for communities across the region. The Nook gave me not just skills, but the confidence to dream big.

I have been part of the Nook for the past three months, and it has been an incredible journey. When I first joined, I was nervous about meeting new people and unsure of how I would be welcomed. However, from day one, everyone was warm and supportive, and I quickly felt at home.

As time went on, I began to truly enjoy being at the Nook. From overcoming challenges in the kitchen to building meaningful friendships, each day became something I looked forward to. It even reached a point where weekends felt empty without being there β that is how much it meant to me.

Of course, there were challenges. Being part of a self-directed learning program was not easy at first, but with determination and the help of the internet, I adapted and grew stronger.

One of the highlights of my journey was attending a psychosocial support camping trip β my very first. We spent three unforgettable days together, climbing a mountain and taking part in what we called "The Journey of Life." It taught me so much about teamwork, unity, and pushing beyond my limits. Honestly, the experience was so powerful that I did not even want to return home.

Joining the Nook also helped me discover my passion for baking. What began as something I intended to pursue part-time, simply to gain experience, has now grown into something much more meaningful. I realised that I am truly skilled at it, and I now envision myself starting my own baking business in the future.

This journey has shaped me into a more confident, capable, and driven person. The tailoring skills I learned transformed my passion into a thriving business. I now design and produce school uniforms and traditional wear, employing 3 tailors and serving over 50 families monthly. The Nook showed me that rural areas can be centers of innovation and success.

Tawanda

Turning Scrap into Opportunity

Innovation is not always about expensive materials or advanced machinery. Sometimes, true creativity comes from seeing value where others see waste. This is exactly what Tawanda demonstrated by transforming scrap metal into a practical, durable fire cooking stand for his aunt.

Tawanda's project stood out as an excellent example of innovation, sustainability, and community support. Using discarded metal pieces that many people would consider useless, he designed and constructed a strong cooking stand capable of supporting heavy pots during outdoor cooking. His work proved that scrap materials can be recycled and repurposed into useful household equipment β while reducing environmental waste.

The Making of the Stand

From the beginning, Tawanda showed dedication throughout the innovation process. He carefully selected suitable scrap metal, cleaned and prepared the materials, measured the required dimensions, and welded the pieces together to create a stable and reliable structure. The final product was both functional and affordable β demonstrating impressive craftsmanship and technical ability.

The fire cooking stand was specifically made to assist his aunt with daily cooking activities. The design allows firewood to burn efficiently beneath the cooking surface while providing strong support for pots and cooking utensils. This practical solution not only improved convenience in the home, but also highlighted how locally available resources can solve everyday challenges.

A Lesson in Sustainability

Beyond the finished product, Tawanda's project carries an important message about environmental conservation and self-reliance. By reusing scrap metal, he helped reduce waste pollution and showed that communities can benefit from recycling materials instead of discarding them. His innovation encourages young people to think creatively, develop practical skills, and use available resources to create meaningful solutions.

Teachers, fellow learners, and community members were highly impressed by Tawanda's commitment and ability to turn a simple idea into a valuable project. His work reflects the growing importance of technical and vocational skills in empowering young innovators.

More Than a Metal Stand

Tawanda's fire cooking stand is more than just a metal structure β it is a symbol of innovation, sustainability, and community empowerment. His achievement proves that innovation does not depend on expensive resources, but on creativity, determination, and the willingness to solve real-life problems.
