Friends for Matibi provides ongoing annual support to Matibi Mission Hospital through a doctor's salary top-up and a comprehensive drug and medical supply delivery — ensuring this rural hospital can attract qualified medical staff and maintain its essential medicine stock throughout the year.
Why This Support Is Essential
Matibi Mission Hospital is the primary healthcare facility serving tens of thousands of people across the remote Mwenezi district of Zimbabwe. Government salary scales alone make it extremely difficult to attract and retain qualified doctors in this isolated area. Without a top-up contribution, the hospital risks operating without a resident doctor — directly threatening the health and lives of the community it serves.
Equally critical is the annual delivery of drugs and medical supplies. Chronic shortages of basic medicines are a reality in rural Zimbabwe. This project ensures the hospital is stocked with essential medications, consumables, and equipment, so that no patient is turned away or undertreated due to supply shortfalls.
What the Support Covers
- •Doctor's salary top-up — annual contribution to supplement the government salary and retain a qualified resident doctor
- •Annual drug delivery — essential medicines, consumables, and medical supplies for the hospital's wards, outpatient clinic, maternity unit, and operating theatre
- •Continuity of care — ensuring year-round healthcare availability for the tens of thousands of patients who depend on Matibi Mission Hospital
Together with the Operating Theatre renovation (Phase 1 completed, Phase 2A underway), this annual support programme represents Friends for Matibi's long-term commitment to the hospital as a cornerstone of healthcare in the Mwenezi district.
Annual budget: USD $29,000
