Matibi Nook Hub Leads Fight Against Drug and Substance Abuse

Matibi Nook Hub is complementing the government's efforts in addressing drug and substance abuse by creating safe spaces for young people to openly discuss the challenges they face. In a recent focused group discussion, youths identified some of the most commonly abused substances in the community, including alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, crystal meth, codeine cough syrup, and tobacco.

Identifying Root Causes and Personal Stories

Participants highlighted several root causes driving drug use, such as peer pressure, the desire to fit into social groups, and the pursuit of confidence. The facilitator encouraged honest dialogue by asking if anyone had personal experiences with drug use. A few brave participants shared their stories—explaining how they were first introduced to substances, the struggles they faced, and how they eventually sought help to overcome their challenges.

Understanding the Consequences

The discussion also shed light on the devastating consequences of substance abuse. These included poor physical and mental health, disrupted education, broken relationships, and even involvement in crime. At the same time, participants explored positive strategies to avoid drugs, such as focusing on personal goals, engaging in productive activities, and surrounding themselves with supportive peers.

Interactive Learning Through Performance

To reinforce their learning, participants performed short skits dramatizing the dangers of drug use and showcasing positive decision-making. These performances brought the lessons to life, reminding everyone present that young people have the power to protect their futures through informed choices.

Empowering Message

In closing, the facilitator left participants with an empowering message: "Your future is greater than drugs, and it is worth protecting."

Through initiatives like these, Matibi Nook Hub continues to stand as a beacon of hope, equipping young people with knowledge, resilience, and the courage to make healthier life choices.
