Journey to Greatness: A Camp to Remember

There are moments in a learner’s journey that go beyond the familiar moments that challenge, inspire, bring people together, and create memories that last long after the experience is over.

This cycle, our learners stepped away from the familiar nook and into a completely different environment for a five-day, four-night Psychosocial Support Camp themed “Journey to Greatness.”

Held at Mafuramhepo Resort in Masvingo, near Lake Kyle, the camp provided learners with an opportunity to explore, reflect, connect, and challenge themselves in a new environment. With the campsite located close to the lake, nature was never far away. The sounds of wildlife, including the occasional sounds of hippos from the lake, added an unexpected and memorable dimension to the experience.

Building Confidence, Resilience and Connection

Throughout the camp, learners participated in a wide range of activities designed to strengthen confidence, resilience, self-awareness, teamwork, communication, leadership, and healthy relationships.

Team Building Activities

Team building was a central part of the camp, providing learners with opportunities to develop trust, communication, cooperation, problem-solving skills, confidence, and leadership while having fun together.

A variety of activities and challenges were conducted, including:

The Big Rope: Learners were tied together as a group and challenged to move a set distance without falling. What appeared to be a simple challenge quickly became a powerful lesson in communication, patience, coordination, trust, and the importance of moving forward together.

Balancing Beam: Learners worked together to complete a balancing challenge, encouraging concentration, coordination, mutual support, and effective communication.

Trust Fall: This activity encouraged learners to place their trust in their teammates and reinforced the importance of dependability, support, and building positive relationships.

Spider Web: Learners were challenged to navigate through a web of ropes without touching them. Success required strategic thinking, communication, teamwork, cooperation, and collective problem-solving.

Shoe Game: A fun and energetic challenge that brought plenty of laughter while encouraging quick thinking, teamwork, and healthy competition.

Tug of War: This high-energy activity encouraged unity, determination, coordination, teamwork, and a strong sense of team spirit.

Beyond the fun and excitement, these activities provided valuable life lessons. Learners experienced first-hand the importance of trusting others, communicating effectively, supporting their peers, solving problems together, and recognising that every individual has an important role to play in achieving a common goal.

The Journey of Life and Mountain Climbing

Through experiential activities and mountain-climbing challenges, learners reflected on their personal journeys—the obstacles they have encountered, the challenges they have overcome, and the “mountains” they continue to climb as they work towards their goals and aspirations.

The activities encouraged learners to recognise that personal growth often requires courage, perseverance, resilience, and a willingness to step outside their comfort zones.

A Journey to Great Zimbabwe

The camp also included a journey inspired by Great Zimbabwe, encouraging learners to reflect on their roots, heritage, identity, and resilience.

The experience highlighted the importance of understanding where we come from as we look towards where we are going, while encouraging learners to appreciate their history and the strength of those who came before them.

ZimParks Visit and Lion Sightseeing

Located approximately one kilometre from the campsite, ZimParks provided another exciting opportunity for learners to explore their surroundings and connect with nature.

The wildlife experience, including lion sightseeing, added adventure to the camp while giving learners an opportunity to appreciate Zimbabwe’s natural environment.

Psychosocial Support and Life Skills

A key component of the camp was the series of psychosocial support sessions, which created space for meaningful conversations, self-reflection, and personal growth.

Learners engaged with topics including stress management, self-worth, healthy relationships, mindfulness, and trends affecting young people. These sessions encouraged learners to understand themselves better, reflect on their experiences, develop healthy coping strategies, and think intentionally about the choices they make.

Celebration, Colour and Memories

The camp was not all about challenges and reflection. There was also plenty of time for laughter, fun, and celebration.

The Colour Festival and Colour Run provided a vibrant conclusion to the camp, bringing learners and facilitators together in an energetic celebration filled with colour, joy, teamwork, and unforgettable memories.

More Than Just a Camp

The Journey to Greatness was more than a five-day camping experience. It was an opportunity for learners to discover that greatness is not a destination—it is a journey shaped by challenges, choices, relationships, courage, resilience, reflection, and continuous growth.

Over five days and four nights, our learners laughed, explored, challenged themselves, conquered fears, supported one another, reflected on their journeys, developed new skills, and created lasting memories.

From the nook to the campsite.
From challenges to reflection.
From uncertainty to confidence.
From the familiar to the extraordinary.

This was a Journey to Greatness and what a journey it was!
